香港維基媒體協會周年研討會2010

HONG KONG July 15, 2010 — On the coming Saturday, Wikimedia Hong Kong will hold her 3rd Anniversary Conference, focus on our Education Toolkits For Liberal Studies, a project funded by the grant from the Wikimedia Foundation.

In the new syllabus of Hong Kong High School, Liberal Studies has been added as the compulsory subject. The Liberal Studies is a subject that requires students to find the information themselves and without the help from teachers as much as possible.

As Wikipedia is the 4th popular website and a major site for user to share and get knowledge for free, it is really necessary for us to teach Hong Kong students how to use Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Projects correctly, to get the information beyond the Wikipedia articles, by clicking to the links in the footnote.

So we would like to create a set of toolkits for secondary schools students, to promote Wikimedia to secondary school students in Hong Kong, and to encourage them to share their knowledge to Wikimedia projects eventually.

Every anniversary of the chapter’s establishment 3 years ago, Wikimedia Hong Kong held anniversary conference to review and plan our effort on promoting Wikimedia and free culture movement.

香港- 本會於2007年7月成立，至今快將三年，故是次特意舉辦週年紀念慶祝活動，以回顧在三年來本會對於在香港致力宣揚自由文化和提升各維基媒體計劃於香港之實用和知名度所作出之努力，且於研討會中討論未來的計劃進程及本會往後之目標，尤其是近日獲基金會撥款資助，現時由本會設計中的通識科教育資源套裝。

因應特區政府近年推行之新「三三四教育」中，對於新設通識科目並以此作為必修科目的新政策，本會為希望能讓修讀通識科之學生更容易，有效率和正確地使用維基百科和各維基媒體計劃的資源作為其中一個於進行資料搜集和分析的其中一個資料來源，故此特意設計此教材套裝。此套裝將會介紹一般使用維基百科之正確用法和注意事項，並且希望藉此提升學生對自由文化的意識和使用，貢獻及分享維基百科的興趣。

基金會宣佈陳霆出任理事會主席

Gdańsk, Poland July 8, 2010 — Today, at the sixth annual Wikimania Conference, the Wikimedia Foundation announced important changes to the Board of Trustees.

Every year at Wikimania, the Wikimedia Board appoints its officers for the coming year. This year, Ting Chen was appointed Chair of the Board, Stuart West was appointed Vice-chair (and continues as Board Treasurer), and Samuel Klein becomes Board Secretary.

Also, the Wikimedia chapters have made their selections for the two chapters-selected Board seats. Arne Klempert has been reappointed, and Phoebe Ayers has been newly appointed. This means that Michael Snow will be leaving the Board: he has been invited to join the Advisory Board, and the Board warmly thanks him for his years of leadership and service.

“Michael has been a loyal and devoted leader in the Wikimedia movement. I am grateful to count him as a colleague and a friend, and I know he will continue to make important contributions,” said Ting Chen. “I am also pleased to welcome Phoebe Ayers, on behalf of the entire Board. And I am humbled and honored to have been selected as the Board Chair.”

There are 10 seats on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees and according to the Foundation’s bylaws, three members are elected by the Wikimedia community, two are selected by the Wikimedia chapters, the Founder seat is held by Jimmy Wales, and four members are appointed by the Board itself to provide additional, specific expertise. Currently all seats on the Board of Trustees are filled.

波蘭格但斯克 — 維基媒體基金會理事會在今日的第六屆維基媒體國際年會(Wikimania)上宣布最新人事變動，首位華人理事陳霆獲任命理事會主席。陳霆對於自己當選理事會主席深感榮幸。

同時宣布的其他任命包括，韋司徒 (Stu West) 出任副主席兼司庫，赫連善 (Samuel Klein)獲任命為秘書。理事會同時宣布了循地方分會界別選出的理事，分別是成功連任的甘藝寧 (Arne Klempert )，和新選出的魏鳳碧(Phoebe Ayers)。陳霆代表理事會全體歡迎魏鳳碧加入理事會。

而施米高 (Michael Snow)因未能勝出地方分會界別的投票而未能連任的，理事會對他的貢獻表示由衷感謝，陳霆談到前任施米高指出：「米高是一位既忠誠、又積極投入的維基運動領袖。我很感激我有這位可靠的同事和朋友。他卸任後一定會繼續對維基群體作出重大貢獻。」

維基媒體基金會理事會在每年的維基媒體國際年會期間宣布人事變動。根據會章，理事會總共有10位理事組成，3位由用戶直選產生，2位由地方分會選出，1席維基百科創始人衛詹美(Jimmy Wales)所有，另外4席由理事會任命，以吸納不同的專業人士，現是理事會並無出缺。

The 3rd meeting of members assembly of Wikimedia Hong Kong has been assembled on 28/3/2010. On the meeting, the President of Wikimedia Hong Kong, Jeromy-Yu Chan, read the State of the chapter address 2009-2010, which covers all the areas of what the Chapter did in last half year.

Mr. Chan said the development of Wikimedia Hong Kong has been on progress, it is time for them to normalize the infrastructure, for instance, setting up a council. Several resolutions also held in the meeting, including the abolition of Temporary Provisions for suspending the establishment of the Council and the adoption of Bylaw for the Council.

香港維基媒體協會的第三次會員大會己於3月28日於香港中文大學舉行，在會上，會長陳予向各位會員發表了 2009 至 2010 年度的會情咨文，會上討論了多項議題，包括代表會附例和財務報告，最後全體會員對待決議案進行表決。

2009 至 2010 年度的會情咨文當中函蓋了協會在上年度在多方面的工作報告，當中陳會長表示，現時由於協會正在踏上軌道，可以開始進行建制正常化的工作，例如設立代表會。在會中亦有進行多項議決，包括廢除《暫緩組成代表會臨時條款》及通過《香港維基媒體協會代表會附例》。

HONG KONG –The Directory assembled its monthly meeting in the Saturday afternoon, and accepted Director S. C. So’s resignation, & elected Morgan Chan as his successor.

Director So had announced his resignation from his Directorship & the post of Commissioner for Communications, due to his own personal career planing on Saturday. The resignation was effective immediately after the approval.

On the meeting, Vincent Tsui was also appointed as Adminstrative Assistant for Outreach, and the Directory will appoint Tsui’s substitute when the Directors see an available talent emerges.

HONG KONG – The Chinese Wikimedia Conference 2009 is being held successfully during 26 December – 27 December in The Institute For Tourism Studies of Macau . As being one of the participant of the conference, we would like to express our thankfulness towards those supporters, volunteers and guests who have make their participation to the conference. especially towards Wikimedia Macau, whereas they have provide a high degree of commitment to organize and maintain the conference since the beginning.

The conference and its activity gains a good reaction and participation from both participant and general public, especially receiving well feedback from participant during the workshop. Interviews also taken place from several journalist within Macau include newspaper and television and their coverage to this event may also be seen.

As the new year of 2010 is oncoming soon, we would like to also wish you have a happy new year. ####

第二屆中文維基年會於12月26至27日間於澳門旅遊學院舉行並且圓滿完成。
本會作為其中一個有成員出席是次會議且同為協辦單位之維基協會分會，謹此感謝所有到場出席之嘉賓，義工及講者，

HONG KONG –The Directory had its monthly meeting earlier today, and accepted Director Johnny Cheung’s resign, & elected Rover Wong as his successor.

Director Cheung had announced his resignation from his Directorship & the post of Commissioner for Outreach, due to his own personal career planing on Monday. The resignation was effective immediately after the approval. Cheung was subsequently invited as advisor for the Outreach Commission.

After the election, Wong, who was the Administrative Assistant for the Outreach Commission, has sworn in as the Director soon after.###

Dear Friends

We are actually writing to present a new way of donating to Wikipedia via Wikimedia Hong Kong (WMHK).

As you might hear or even donated before, in the last three months of every year, the Wikimedia Foundation will have an annual fundraising.

From last year, Wikimedia Foundation had invites chapters to involve with such annual process, and dividing the received donation from the particular jurisdiction 50/50 with the regional chapter there.

As the Hong Kong Chapter of Wikimedia, we are excited to join the program this year.

Under such program, you have two choices when you decide to donate to Wikimedia, either go to the Foundation directly or come through us.

We are obviously suggesting the second way to you, because WMHK is one of the Charitable Institutions of a Public Character exempt from tax under section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance.

So if you are chargeable to salaries tax, personal assessment or profits tax, you can claim deduction for the aggregate of approved charitable donation up to 35% of the assessable income or profits, with your donation to us is less than $100.

However, the Wikimedia Foundation has 501(c)(3) tax exempt status in the United States, so your direct donation to the Foundation may not enjoy such favourable refund, unless you have some business in the States.

As Wikimedia Hong Kong taking part in the chapter fundraising program, the donation to us is the same to donation Foundation, as we will share our donation 50/50 to Foundation too.

As all of you might know that, Wikipedia’s survival & daily operation rely heavily on the donations to Wikimedia Foundation. We actually need quite a lot of funding for various purposes & initiatives, from basic ones like maintaining the servers to coup with larger & larger database, to the global ones like supporting chapter building movements in different countries.

Wikimedia Hong Kong a local non-profit making NGO, whose work aims to help collecting & spreading free knowledge and to support the Wikimedia projects, for example Wikipedia. Promoting free culture along with local counterparts is another important mission. In other words, our major task is helping the Foundation to deal the local press, and other local PR & outreach work. Such work though are mostly done by volunteers, some administrative costs is expected, as well as administrative cost to maintain the chapter as a non-profit making company.

HONG KONG – As Director Johnny Cheung had announced his resignation from his post of Commissioner for Outreach & Directorship, due to his own personal career planing today, the President of Directory announced the following appointments in this morning, which were all effective immediately:

a. Rover Wong  was appointed the Acting Commissioner for Outreach, until any other resolution pass by the Directory. Rover was the Administrative Assistant of the Commission.

b. Morgan Chan was appointed the Administrative Assistant in the Outreach Commission, who was the AA in Secretariat.  He should also remain to be the Press contact of the chapter.

For Mr Cheung’s resignation, the President of the Directory had accepted his resignation from his post of Commissioner, which was  effective immediately. However, his resignation from his directorship will be subjected to the final decision of the Directory. The directory will assemble for the final decision as soon as possible. ###
